FREE TRAINING Offered in Preparation for National Alcohol Screening Day "How to Conduct Screening & Brief Intervention for Alcohol Use Disorders in Your Clinic, Community or College" The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) has recently released a list of its upcoming training's and brief interventions in preparation for Alcohol Awareness Month and Alcohol Screening Day in April 2003. The training's, which are free, are sponsored by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, and Screening for Mental Health, Inc. FACTS * Alcohol is the most frequently used and abused substance in the United States. * Approximately 14 million people, of 7.4% of the adult population, meet the diagnostic criteria for alcohol abuse or alcoholism * Maternal consumption of alcohol can lead to fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). * Approximately 100,000 deaths occur each year through crashes, injuries and alcohol-related disease. * Over 150 medications interact harmfully with alcohol. * Alcohol has been linked to a number of cancers including stomach, colon, rectal, head and neck, and breast. National Alcohol Screening Day (NASD) is an effective way to identify those in your community who may be drinking at risky levels. NASD's education and screening provide an effective way for the adult population to understand how alcohol may affect one's health and to prevent their progression to alcohol abuse or dependence. Promote and conduct a successful alcohol education and screening event for the general public. 2. Conduct screening and brief intervention for at-risk drinking and other alcohol problems as part of a public health event or in your practice. Targeted Audience: Clinicians, administrators, health care professionals and staff affiliated with colleges, mental health centers, health clinics, social service agencies, advocacy, faith-based and prevention groups.
