I am a certified school counselor and want to go to work in a clinical setting. I am a certified hypnotherapist and this is the type of healing work that I want to do. If someone knows of a clinical set-up or a therapist that needs a partner, I am very-very interested. I have always liked mental health issues and I am definately ready for a change. Please contact me if you know of any openings.

Sincerely, Rose Kirkland Rkirklan@hiplains.net

wb01372_.gif (1125 bytes) We had a question posted about a six year old who is passing a note to another child that he wanted "to sex" with her. We were asked how to handle such a situation. Whenever children show interest in a subject, it is best to talk with them about it. Sometimes, there are subjects that are difficult to discuss with your child. In these cases, we recommend you finding another adult whom you trust, a clergy or psychotherapist for example, who can address the issue with the child. Best of luck. Please email for a referral if you desire. Thanks for posting your question. The Provisions Consulting Staff.

I have a friend who is currently in an acute psychiatric ward in Bodmin, Cornwall, England. she has been in an abusive/violent relationship for 20 or so years. I feel the ward she is in at the moment is not the right place for her and she is currently very very low, and has been suicidal, things keep repeating themselves over and over again and she seems to blame herself for everything. Where can I get proper help for her?.

Comments

I wanted to comment on the question posed by the person in England. Anytime family members/friends have concerns regarding the appropriateness of a treatment facility, I always encourage they mention the concerns to case managers, doctors, etc. of the respective facility. If well run and truly operating in clients' best interest, they will not only validate your concerns but also discuss other treatment options and/or substantiate the reasons the person is best suited to remain in the current facility. When someone is acutely 'suicidal' and a present risk to harm themselves, depending upon the severity, they may need to be medicated, etc. to keep them alive. Consider some of the current treatment decisions as temporary means to keep her safe and alive so that alternative methodologies will prove effective in the very near future. Considering the long history of relational difficulties, etc., she may be well suited for therapy and/or psychopharmacological treatments; however, it's important to remember that people can change only when they themselves want to change. Hang in there. Stephen, Ph.D.

From the Provisions COnsulting Staff. Re: Help in England. There can be poor treatment facilities; however, the comment left by Stephen, PhD, the previous writer seems a solid recommendation for you and your friend. Starting with the existing treatment team, perhaps in a conference with them, your concerns could be addressed and potential solutions occur. Unfortunately, our resources currently are limited to therapists licensed to practice in the United States. Best of luck.

I am a 32 year old female. I am a teacher, graduate student and wife. My life is complete, but, for the last two years I have been suffering from agoraphobia. I have a sincere fear of driving on the expressways of Indianapolis. My fears are starting to increase or should I say the intensity. I told my family doctor about this and he gave me Zoloft. I took it for about seven days and I did notice a change however, I felt funny about taking it because I am not depressed. I am just terrified of high wats, expressways, bridges and open air areas. Can someone help me.

Comments

From the Provisions Consulting Staff: To Terrified with Agoraphobia: It sounds like some mental health assistance is warranted at this point, perhaps a second opinion to your family doctor's. There are several treatment modalities that might be helpful in treating your agorophobia. Seek out a qualified mental health therapist in your area (you might check our thrapist registry to see if someone is in your area)to discuss options. Life is too short to be so terrified. Best of luck.

Comments

Regarding the agorophobia question, I would like to offer one important supplement to the Provision recommendation. I concur that a second opinion is generally warranted, especially when a psychiatric diagnosis is made by a general practitoner of medicine. Although physicians are trained to diagnose across various specialties, a reason exists for "specialists" in psychiatry, orthopedics, cardiology, etc. Therefore, as Provisions has suggested, a second opinion is likely warranted. However, first I would discuss the medication with your current physician. Zoloft, classified as an antidepressant, has been indicated to treat some symptoms of anxiety conditions (like agorophobia). Anxiety disorders and their symptoms are closely related to those for depression, so careful screening is helpful. Also, pharmacology with counseling is generally the preferred method of treatment for anxiety symptoms. Best regards in your progress. Stephen, Ph.D.

Is there a disorder for someone who always in fear that something will happen to their loved ones and they do strange things like, superstitous things, because that makes the person believe that everything will be alright? And they are always in fear of this. Also, sometimes they feel guilty when they have a good time when they are going out with friends or having just having fun? Hello, my name is Paul. I am an abuser....I was in a two year relationship and about six months ago I found out my live-in girlfriend had kissed another guy 3 times. The pushing I had previously done to her steam rolled into choking, biting, hitting, mental abuse, threats, and degrading her by stripping her nude and many other dipicable acts. I need help and do not know where to turn. She and I have seperated and are still friends but, wisely she doesn't want to be together. We are still in love but, we know I have to get better for her and I to ever have a future. I need to know what to do to stop this pattern of violence can anyone help?

My sister is an alcoholic. She is 44 years old. For some reason when she gets drunk, she gets out a big knife or razor blade and cuts herself really bad. She has been doing this for 10 years now. She takes lithium, but does not go to a counselor. She turns really mean and crazy when she drinks, and then sometimes she does the cutting thing. Is there any outside treatment for her or should our family have her comitted to a mental hospital? Thanks Gwen

From the Provisions Consulting Staff: About telling your mom you need therapy: there are typically agencies in an area that specialize in telephone or crisis counseling. Your local phone directory may offer such a place for you to call and fully discuss the difficulties in telling your mom your need for therapy. Usually these phone counseling centers are anonymous so you need not tell anyone face to face why you need help. Best of luck.

From Provisions Consulting Staff: Re: Sister is an alcoholic - it sounds like an intervention and/or an assessment is needed. Without further information, it is difficult to say whether in or out patient treatment is warranted at this time; however, from your description, some treatment may be helpful for both your sister and yourself to deal with her behavior. For inpatient, visit a local psychiatric facility to have your evaluation. For out patient therapy, try to seek out a chemical dependency counselor with experience in the personality disorders to assist you in the decisions you face. You may want to check our Find A Therapist Listings to see if there is a qualified counselor in your area. Or you may try the Alcoholics Anonymous or AL_ANON avenue for a slef help option. These groups are usually listed in your local phone book. Best of Luck.

Does anybody know of a psychiatrist in Connecticut (Hartford area) who would make home visits to evaluate medications for a psychotic person who won't leave the house. She is neither a danger to herself or others. She is currently taking lithium and trilafon. Her diagnosis at her last hospitalization in 1992 was a dual diagnosis "bipolar manic" and "schizoaffective disorder". She may need to go to a group home, but I am hoping to avoid the intermediate step of hospitalization, which she would resist.

In regards to the comments posted on May 7: If you think you may be depressed, there are a number of things you can do. First, there are a number of mental health articles available on our web site. From the Home page, simply go to "Public" and then "Library." Here you can choose articles and learn more about several topics including depression. Secondly, you may want to call the National Mental Health Association (or your local MHA affiliate which should be listed in the phone book). The phone number of NMHA is 1-800-969-NMHA. Russ, This is a tough one. We found 7or 8 "apartments for the elderly" that are under the Dallas Housing Authority. Their general number is 214-951-8300. The Garland Housing Agency is another possibility at 972-205-3393. I don't really know if she's capable of living alone or how much assistance she'll qualify for, but another option might be to get her enrolled in NorthSTAR (877-450-4357), as a first step. Turtle Creek Manor offers room, board, and even some counseling, but I think it's more for transitional living. Might be worth a shot, though. They're at 214-871-2484. Vickery Towers is 214-826-1113. If all else, fails, he might just try calling the Community Council of Greater Dallas directly at 214-871-5065.

I am a Caucasion female engaged to an Asian man. We are having some HUGE conflicts that I believe are, for the most part, a difference in cultures. We need to work out some issues before we get married, because we both feel marriage is forever. We both are amenable to therapy. I would like to find a therapist/family counselor who is Asian. My fiance needs to deal with family issues that I believe only someone who knows what he is going through can help him (and me) with. We live in Berkeley, California. I thank you very much.

What are symptoms of torette's syndrome among children?

Date:

Tourette's syndrome is a tic disorder that has multiple motor tics (an involuntary, sudden, rapid, recurrent, nonrhythmic, stereotyped movement or vocalization), and at least one vocal tic, although they do not have to be present at the same time. They have to occur multiple times per day. Sometimes Tourette's syndrome will result in the vocalization of inappropriate language. We recommend a consult with a professional.

There is a lot of information available on Stockholm Syndrome, but it is obviously more limited in how it applies to an environment of domestic violence. There are a couple of web sites that discuss this issue specifically. They are: http://www.nodo50.org/mujeresred/violencia-am-i.html as well as http://www.dvis.org/stockholm.html A couple more good web sites that may provide you with more information and/or contacts are: The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence at www.NCADV.org and at www.domesticviolence.org . If you are in crisis, call the domestic violence intervention service. Their crisis line number is 918-585-3143.

My son is Bipolar I with psychotic episodes - he is on North Star program starting 9-1-03. They want to give him Haldol. He is now on Abilify and Geodon (not really good - he is like a zombie and has severe tremors in his hands.) What is the effect of Haldol and is it better or worse than any other drugs? He is at their mercy until he gets approved for SSD and can get on medicare, so I am worried. Yet the new "improved" drugs do not seem to work either. Verna Owens

Hello, my name is Morgan. I'm 26, and the mother of 4 children. My husband is currently stationed in Iraq, and I've been feeling really awful. I took a test and it said I had extreme to severe depression. I didn't really believe it, but I thought I'd better make sure, because my mother committed suicide almost 5 years ago. No one ever knew she was depressed either. I would like to stress that I am NOT having suicidal tendencies. I'm just constantly tired and worn down. I have headaches consistantly and stomachaches, and I feel like I need to do something about it, I'm just not sure what. I don't like taking medications, and I hate the thought of going to a Dr. and just having him/her slap me on a medicine. I would like an opinion on what I should do. Thank you.

I have, after 5 years, finally gotten away from an abusive spouse, but am having more trouble away from him than I had while in the relationship. I am fighting an overwhelming need to be involved with him again and am finding myself constantly angry with friends and family who are trying to help me stay away. As strange as it sounds, I still love him intensely, and fear without help I will end up either involved with him again, or in a similarly dangerous situation. Do you know of a mental health provider in the Nashville area that is familiar with spouses of batterers recovery or the Stockholm Syndrome, which is what I fear I am dealing with? I had just enough strength to get myself and the kids out this time, and am terrified I will find myself back in the same trap, with him or someone like him and not be able to get out.

Hello, I have had panic attacks for 15 years. I have tried medication about 8 years ago and started with Zoloft which worked well for 2 years, then it just stopped working. My doctor has tried all the SSRI's and the older medications for depression all in combination with Xanax with worse results than my actual disorder. I am still taking Xanax 3mg daily which I have tapered down from 8mg per day. I am haunted constantly by scary thoughts and cannot be left alone anymore. I have purchased the older Attacking Anxiety Program in addition to the new Attacking Anxiety Program and also I have gone through their Personal Coaching Program thru the Midwest Center. I have also read several Claire Weekes Books. My main problem is the avoidance cycle. The more I challenge myself to feel my body's reaction, the more scary thoughts I imagine. Do you have any recommendations for an inpatient clinic that does not promote medication for complete recovery? I live in Southern California. I contacted the UCLA Program, but they discontinued the exposure and therapy part of their program and now their program is about the doctors trying to find the right combination of medications for the patient. I have already gone the medication route over the past 8 years and know there must be a more effective treatment clinic. This condition is ruining my life and my relationships. I am 41 years old and just want a better quality of life. The avoidance of panic disorder and depression almost seems too much to handle. I have so much selft doubt that I will never get over this condition. I get so depressed and scared and I feel so hopeless. I would appreciate any information you can provide. Sincerely, Helen Keith

If they can't help your daughter themselves, they may know of more local resources for you to contact. You may also want to call the Nat'l Association of Social Workers in Massachusetts at 800-242-9794 and ask for a referral. I am looking for an apartment in the Richardson/Garland area for my elderly parents. They have lived in a small town in OK and it is time for them to relocate so that I can keep a closer eye on them. They have limited funds so the apartment must be affordable and in a safe area. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Terri Brown

I think that child abuse is so wrong and that the attackers should get the death penalty.

Looking for a caring, experienced phychiatrist for my son who is in 40's. A Catholic or other christian phychiatrist would be preferred. He had been on risperal and two other meds., stopped because he was suffering from anxiety, doctor changed him but he got worse. He got off all meds about 3 mos. ago and has now flipped out. Need a reference to a really good phychiatrist.
